The original Limits of Humanity:

Is there a border we will never cross? Are there places we will never reach, no matter how hard we try? It turns out, there are. Even with sci-fi technology, we are trapped in a limited pocket of the Universe and the finite stuff within it. How much universe is there for us and how far can we go?

Kurzgesagt – In a NutshellПре месец

Hey Everybody! So this video is a remake and remaster of an older video that has a mistake in it. You can watch the original here: What is the mistake? In a nutshell: In the original video we said that it was PHYSICALLY impossible to leave the local group and reach other galaxy groups. That the rest of the universe is moving away from us too fast to catch up. But that’s wrong. It is not PHYSICALLY impossible to leave the Local Group, just extremely unlikely that we’ll ever do it. BUT: If you have a lot of time and a fast spaceship you can still get to a limited amount of galaxies - these galaxies will eventually get out of reach forever but until then, they are technically within reach. So why did we keep the video up and didn’t purge it when we deleted our addiction and refugee crisis videos? Well, it has to do with the nature and severity of the mistake: We did talk to a few astrophysicists to ask them what they thought and if we should take down the video. Their feedback was pretty clear, they thought it was still fine as the universe expansion things explained in the video are correct and they didn’t consider the local group thing as too major. This was actually a case of “good enough”. Also, back when this original upload happened, Kurzgesagt was operating at pretty tight margins and just redoing a video was not easy for us. Back then the team was small and we were fighting to put new videos out. So we just swallowed the bitter pill and kept the video around. But the video still bothered us, as far as we know this was the biggest unfixed mistake on the channel. Super frustrating, especially because the core idea of the video is so fascinating. The limit of our species. The actual limit. So yeah, we finally remade the video, sorry for taking this long, life got in the way. The original video will stay up, you can compare the two if you want to see how far we have come in a few years in terms of production quality. All in all, we could only grow the channel and work on getting better because of direct support from you guys. So thank you for that. - Philipp PS: If you want, check out our shop for some new posters about the universe posters and black hole plushies and stuff like that:

If we look at space through the eyes of science? We will never understand the meanings and true origins. We are all source beings that were all created at the beginning, and we have have live countless lives. You are connected to everything in the universe and soon enough those who recognize their true nature will be able to connect with all of the beings in the universes. How? We are already connected, we are all one. Look at the spiritual side of the universe. It may lead you into a place of better understanding and less speculation by ‘science.’ Just a thought Love to all❤️

I have a question: "how to destroy the univers" you say, that one theorie is, that at one point, the universe expand faster than the speed of light. at this point nothing can be hold together anymore and the universe will die. In this video you say, that beyond that "horizon" everything is faster than the speed of light (relativ to us). Shouldnt colapse the universe at this point allready, or do i make a make a mistake in reasoning? Or does that means, that we just cant catch up that part, because its as fast as we and we can only (in theory) travel with the speed of light?

The idea of a future observer looking into the night sky and seeing nothing, not knowing of anything that we know today is terrifying; just a static eternal and singular galaxy as the entire universe. Because that very well may mean that we know nothing from what we would have known billions of years ago had we the technology to know what we know now. What makes us think that we even understand what we see when we look up at night now? We know nothing.

I'm thinking this video is a wee bit early. Maybe reupload once we colonize one of Neptune's satellites? Also, if 3 stars are born per year, how many run out of fuel and fizzle out? How can you even prove it considering how vast our own galaxy is? Isn't the entirety of the all the mass of the celestial bodies in our star system only equal to like .00001% of the Milky Way? And you're trying to bum people out using concepts we will never truly understand. The universe has been around for billions of years. Humans? Thousands. Most people know and understand that being a mathematical genius isn't required to know that the universe if far too big and obscure to reach any kind of conclusion other than it will be around long after we are history.

  • Oli DR
    Oli DRПре 16 сати

The thing is, with potential applications of quantum communications, there might be no need to physically travel such a distance. We know that two entangled particles are capable of communicating instantaneously over perhaps indefinite physical distances. Even if you needed to physically travel to such a location, from what we currently know about space-time, there might be some way of traversing vast distances quickly through non-conventional means. Scientific development is almost exponential in terms of how quickly advancements can be made on the back of prior knowledge. Thirty years ago we had barely achieved handheld mobile communications and open internet access. Now we have potential options for FTL communications, quantum computing (which is BIG in terms of computational speed etc), and a data-sphere you can access instantly from a handheld device (almost) anywhere on the planet. Give it a few years, a decade or two, and this limit will likely be less of a concern.

these videos are entertaining to watch, but the thought of travelling extremely far out to other planets or galaxies that are getting further and further away from us at increasing speeds slightly makes me scared of travelling to these places, as you'd pretty easily be able to get completely separated from your friends, family, and almost the entirety of the human civilization if you visited one of these places at the wrong time. Fortunately, pretty much none of us here will live long enough to make it to a point in which we have the technology to reach these far out locations, and by the time the technology is made there would likely be barely any galaxies left that could be visited

Modest correction to video beginning about 4:20. The cosmic horizon is *not* necessarily where the recession velocity exceeds the speed of light, though it can be depending on the makeup of the universe (matter, radius, dark energy, etc...). That boundary specifically is instead the Hubble radius defined by r=c/H. Because our universe is not just dark energy, but still has a significant enough matter density, there are still galaxies who are already receding faster-than-light, but whose contemporary light emitted today will still reach us in the far future. In fact many of the objects we see today have *always* been receding faster-than-light and were never within our Hubble sphere, but are none-the-less still visible and will be visible for quite some time. As an example: The cosmic microwave background "surface-of-last-scattering" is currently receding away from us at 3.2c with a redshift of z~1,100. But when those photons were emitted, that same location was receding away from us at over 58c over 13 billion years ago. Any objects on that sphere have then always been receding faster-than-light from us despite their visibility.

The biggest flaw that comes in my mind in this brilliant examination of current celestial understanding is the fundamental human temporal bias. This is a term im not sure anyone else uses or ive seen anyone where else so I'll explain it. Perception is by nature power, and this video shows human perceptual power in the small mistake they made. Each human life on statistical average has the same approximate life span. Lifespan become human temporal bias. Further more the byproduct of entropy introduced by the laws of thermal dynamics compounds this temporal bias. Our lives are short, we know that on a deep intuitive physical level, and thus our perception is stunted by it. IF we are finite everything else must be finite. Right now we're children scared we'll never get to do what we want because of the limtis of time, but look how far our species has come so far. Look how rapidly technology has improved over the last century alone as humanities freeing itself from the shakles of a repressive past fearful of new ideas. I think it's virtually absurd to even say what we may or may not do when we can't even experiment with anything because we're still trapped more or less on this planet. That is the evidence of temporal bias to me. However I really enjoyed this video, think you did a great job, and made me a supporter of your efforts.
